Seagate has released the very first 6Gbps hard drive today (ST32000641AS), it should be available from stores sometime in the next week. The drive has 2TB of storage with 64MB cache. The drive will feature an option to use "short-stroking". Short-stroking means that data is only written to every other track of the drive, which is suppose to give the drive faster access speed, but at the cost of storage space (~50%). Seagate says that if you use short-stroking the drive speed will be comparable to a 10,000RPM Western Digital Velociraptor. The drive will retail for $299 and have a 5 year warranty. |
