Read this Windows 7 guide to get Windows Live Messenger minimized into the taskbar tray, instead of having it open in the taskbar all the time.

For some reason the Windows Live Team has decided to annoy Windows 7 users by using the new application "docking" feature in the Windows 7 taskbar, instead of allowing users to minimize Messenger to the taskbar tray. Which means it now stays "open" in the main section of the taskbar even when you "minimize" it.

To go back to the "old style" of minimizing the program follow these steps:

  1. Exit Windows Live Messenger completely.
  2. Right click on the icon you use to launch Windows Live Messenger. By default it's located in Start > All Programs > Windows Live.
  3. Select Properties.
  4. Click on the Compatibility tab.
  5. Click the check box for "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and then select Windows Vista SP2.
  6. Click Ok to save the changes.
  7. Open Windows Live Messenger.

Now Windows Live Messenger will load into it's old place in the taskbar tray.
