Motorola now has the official 2.1 update for the Motorola Milestone on the Telus network. This is the downloadable update, we will probably see the OTA (over the air) update come out soon as well.

Doing the update manually will save you a lot of data if you're not using WiFi on the phone to update.

Link: Motorola Update

UPDATE AFTER UPDATING:

Well it seems that Motorola has decided to short Telus Milestone users by not even including half of the feature updates. Some of the most pressing issues were resolved, like Bluetooth hands-free calling and MP3 playing skipping, but a lot of the new cool features were not included.

  • Live Wallpapers - Yes
  • Additional Home Screens - Yes
  • Bluetooth Hands Free Dialing - Yes
  • Facebook App Installed by Default: Yes
  • Updated Home Screen Navigation - No
  • New App Launcher - No
  • Voice Typing For All Text Fields - No
  • New Widgets - No
  • 3D Photo Gallery - No
  • Faster Processing - Unsure
If you want to see a list of what was suppose to be included in the 2.1 update you can check out PC Magazines's article and check out the differences.

This is a list of apps for Android that I highly recommend. Almost all of them are available as free versions, but the paid versions are worth it.

All of these apps can be downloaded from the Android Store.

Must Have Apps

  • MSN Droid - Lets you chat on Windows Live Messenger/MSN service. Best MSN interface out there for Android. Plenty of options and settings. Ad supported.
  • Network Monitor - Keeps track of the amount of data you are using on both dataplan and Wifi. Paid version comes with graphs and no ads.
  • Google Maps - If it's not already installed you have to get it!
  • Google Sky - It's a map of the sky!
  • G-Strings - Chromatic guitar tuner that works really well.
  • Ring Droid - Lets you cut up music files to use them as ring tones.
  • Google Shopper & Barcode Scanner - Both programs let you scan barcodes of books, cds and other items to get prices, reviews and information from the web.
  • Key Ring Reward Cards - Get the cards out of your wallet. Scan in your grocery or point cards (Air Miles, Safeway) and then use the laser scanner at the store to scan the bar code on your phone.
Good Apps
  • Super List - Great as a to-do list or grocery list.
  • Weather Eye - Better weather app and widget for Canadian android users. Nice interface.
  • Newspapers - Get newspapers right on your phone.
  • Dock Simulator - Lets you view your phone in both car and media dock modes.
Games
  • Robo Defence - Fun castle defense style game.
  • WSO Poker - Best poker game out there. Online play.
  • Bejeweled Magic - Pretty much the basic Bejeweled game.
  • World War - Strategy game
